Travel photography on film

Ever since I took up photography seriously I’ve been shooting film on and off and whenever it came to travelling, especially internationally, I would opt for digital over analogue as I felt it was more ‘secure’ with the option to back up and I could easily check my images on the fly.

In the past year or so, I’ve found myself shooting less but shooting more film than digital. For trips around the UK, I’d pack film and digital with most of my images shot on film and for trips outside of the UK the opposite was true.

Earlier this year I was in Dublin for a long weekend and brought along my Canon AV-1 and Olympus OMD EM-10. I probably shot about 50/50 on film and digital. Last weekend, I was in Sofia, Bulgaria and made a conscious effort to shoot more film than digital, which I did, and found it quite liberating. With a limited number of shots, I found myself being much more selective about the photos I took. I’d like to say that I spent less time post-processing when I got back but I can’t. While I might’ve taken fewer photos with film than I would have with digital, it took a few evenings developing, scanning, colour correcting and cloning out dust spots from the negatives. I had shot three rolls of 36 exposures resulting in 114 images (I know that the maths doesn’t quite add up, but I managed to squeeze out a few extra frames per roll by being parsimonious with loading the camera). Editing that many digital photos would’ve taken me an evening at most.

Looking back on this experience, I think I would prefer to shoot with film on short-haul, weekend city breaks despite the longer post-trip workflow and for anything longer and more adventurous, I’d be inclined to stick with digital. Perhaps I’ll bring along a film camera in addition in the latter case depending on the type of travel.

Anyhoo, I’ll leave you with a few images from the weekend in Sofia.
